Movies and Media

Movies and other forms of entertainment media are a big passion of mine. I am also a very opinionated person. I have lots of thoughts and feelings about most things I watch. I am going to be putting here any reviews, recommendations or overall thoughts for different shows and movies I have watched.

Shows

The Haunting of Hill House

In the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain and their five children, Steven, Shirley, Theodora, Luke, and Eleanor(Nelly), move into Hill House to a mansion known as Hill House in order to renovate and resell it. They planned to use the money to build their own house, designed by Olivia. However, due to unexpected repairs, they must stay longer, and they begin to experience increasing paranormal phenomena, resulting in a tragic loss and the family fleeing from the house. Twenty six years later, the Crain siblings and their estranged father reunite after another tragedy strikes them, and they are forced to confront the trauma they endured during their time at Hill House.

I'm not usually a fan of horror as a genre, but Hill House is the exception. Everything about this show is amazing, from the acting to the cinematography to the details. The way they handle how all the children deal with their individual trauma makes each of them feel so much more real when you are watching them go through life. I think a big reason why I think this show is so strong is it is terrifying is because it does not rely on jump scares to get a reaction from its audience. I think throughout the whole show there are a total of maybe two jump scares. It leans more into suspense type fear and the fear of the unknown. If I have any friends looking for a new show to watch who are ok with some horror elements but want something with a lot of heart and drama this is one of the first things I will recommend.

The Living and the Dead

This show follows the story of Nathan Appleby, a young psychologist (played by Colin Morgan) and his wife Charlotte (played by Charlotte Spencer) as they move to Nathans family estate in the English countryside after his mother falls ill and soon death. As the new head of house, Nathan is tasked with caring for the people within the community who are plagued by phenomena that could be of the mind or supernatural. The conflicts between supernatural and science create tensions between not only Nathan and the townsfolk, but Nathan and his wife.

This show is full of amazing cinematography, phenomenal acting, and one of the most mind blowing twists I have ever seen in a TV show. This show is what got me to be more open with the idea of horror. I have tried to get everyone I know to watch this show. It ends on a cliffhanger that was meant to lead into a second season, but it ended in getting canceled due to lack of viewership. There is more mystery in this show, which is why I found it so captivating, but it is a drama through and through. This show is in my top 3 favorite shows at the moment, and I do not see it losing its spot anytime soon.
